SOLA Biosciences Secures 6 Billion Yen for ALS Gene Therapy Research

With a 6 billion yen grant from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, SOLA Biosciences Japan is accelerating the development of SOL-257. This gene therapy aims to address amyotrophic lateral sclerosis by correcting misfolded TDP-43 proteins, a primary driver of neurodegeneration in nearly all ALS cases.

The five-year funding program establishes SOLA Japan as a central development hub, connecting the firm's Boston-based operations with academic and manufacturing partners across Japan. Backed by lead investor Curie.Bio and follow-on participant UTEC, the initiative focuses on moving the treatment toward human proof-of-concept trials in both the United States and Japan.

At the core of the project lies the JUMP70 platform, which utilizes the body's native protein quality-control machinery. By engaging HSP70, a molecular chaperone involved in protein repair, SOL-257 is engineered to selectively target and fix misfolded TDP-43 while leaving healthy proteins intact. CEO Keizo Koya emphasized the urgency of the mission, noting the profound responsibility to move the therapy through clinical stages with rigor. The company intends to leverage this cross-border integration to bridge the gap between early-stage laboratory science and clinical application for patients facing limited treatment options.
