PT. Kolaka Nickel Breaks Ground on Hybrid Solar Facility in Sulawesi
In the industrial hub of Oko Oko, PT. Kolaka Nickel Indonesia is constructing a 20 MW solar array paired with a 30 MWh battery storage system. The project, designed to power local nickel operations with clean energy, represents a strategic shift toward decarbonizing the nation's critical mineral sector by early 2027.
The facility relies on high-efficiency photovoltaic modules provided by ZNSHINE SOLAR, specifically engineered to maintain performance under Indonesia’s intense tropical climate. This infrastructure project serves as a test case for integrating renewable energy into heavy industrial processing, moving away from traditional reliance on fossil fuels for self-generated power.
Financial backing for the development was finalized in January 2026 through a non-recourse financing agreement involving ICBC Indonesia, Standard Chartered Bank Indonesia, and China CITIC Bank International. The 11th Design & Research Institute of Electronics Industry Co., Ltd. (EDRI) manages the engineering, procurement, and construction phases. With commissioning set for March 2027, the plant aims to balance industrial output with environmental sustainability requirements.
