Sony and Honda scrap Afeela electric vehicle project
A $15.7 billion writedown has abruptly ended the Afeela project, as Sony Honda Mobility confirms it will no longer produce the luxury electric sedan or the planned SUV. The joint venture, once hailed as a high-tech bridge between consumer electronics and automotive engineering, has officially folded under the weight of Honda’s shifting electrification strategy.
The decision follows Honda’s recent admission of a 2.5 trillion yen loss, the company’s first annual deficit in over seven decades. This financial pivot forced the automaker to abandon several initiatives, including the Zero Series lineup. Sony Honda Mobility stated that without the critical assets and proprietary technology originally promised by Honda, there remains no viable path to bring the vehicles to market. Customers who placed $200 deposits for the Afeela will receive full refunds as the venture unwinds its operations. What began at CES 2020 with the flashy Vision-S concept has now stalled, leaving the once-ambitious partnership to retreat from the crowded and cooling electric vehicle sector.
