Walmart Pledges No Dynamic Pricing on Digital Shelf Labels
Walmart CEO John Furner has moved to silence fears over the company’s transition to digital shelf labels, formally pledging that the retailer will not use customer data or personal shopping history to adjust product prices. The commitment aims to dispel concerns that the technology would enable discriminatory, algorithmic pricing.

In a direct letter to customers, Furner clarified that the rollout of digital shelf labels, slated for all U.S. stores by year-end, is designed to streamline inventory management and save store associates time. He explicitly stated that factors such as income, urgency, or past shopping habits will play no role in price calculations. The company also confirmed that its Sparky AI assistant will not influence pricing structures, regardless of demand or the time of day.
The announcement arrives amid a broader regulatory push against dynamic pricing models. The Federal Trade Commission is currently developing policies to restrict personalized pricing, while states like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maryland have initiated their own legislative efforts to mandate disclosure or outright ban the use of personal data in setting retail costs.
