The newly formed Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, or AGMAI, consists of nine top-tier practitioners tasked with navigating the release of results from OpenAI’s unreleased models. The group was unveiled on September 21st via a guest post on the blog of Fields Medalist Terence Tao, a frequent critic of industry practices. While the stated goal is to provide independent oversight for frontier AI labs, the rollout has left many in the field uneasy.

Researchers are particularly concerned about the sheer volume of mathematical output OpenAI intends to release. There is growing dread that a sudden flood of AI-generated breakthroughs could disrupt the established standards of the discipline. For now, the group faces the difficult challenge of proving its autonomy while managing a company culture that has historically prioritized speed over the rigorous academic vetting mathematicians demand.
