Metacon Unveils Compact 20 MW Electrolyzer to Slash Hydrogen Costs

Uppsala-based Metacon AB has launched a 20 MW multi-level alkaline electrolysis module designed to shrink the physical footprint of large-scale hydrogen plants. By stacking gas-handling and cooling units above electrolyzer stacks, the firm aims to eliminate the need for traditional factory buildings while significantly reducing construction and material overheads.

The new design targets the primary cost drivers of industrial hydrogen production: site area and infrastructure. By vertically integrating components, the module cuts steel structure requirements by 30% and reduces piping systems by 50%. Infrastructure costs linked to the installation footprint can drop by as much as 70% compared to conventional building-based layouts. These savings are particularly critical for projects where land availability is limited or carries a high premium.

Christer Wikner, President and CEO of Metacon, stated that the company is moving beyond simple stack innovation to optimize the entire plant architecture. The module relies on a repeatable, standardized framework that facilitates easier transport and parallel installation, allowing operators to scale capacity incrementally. This approach simplifies on-site assembly and is intended to bolster the business case for large-scale green hydrogen projects by lowering the total investment required for site integration and utility interconnections.
