Cloud Firewall Performance Gap: From 0% to 99.95% Security Effectiveness

The evaluation utilized the Cloud Network Firewall Test Methodology v4.1, subjecting products to real-world exploits, malware, and 5,004 evasion techniques across OSI layers. Fortinet, HPE Juniper, Palo Alto Networks, and Versa Networks secured the top tier, each achieving over 99.7% effectiveness. Conversely, native offerings from AWS and Microsoft Azure scored 0% in security effectiveness, earning a Caution rating. Check Point CloudGuard achieved the highest raw effectiveness at 99.95% but was relegated to a Neutral rating due to high costs relative to performance.

Vikram Phatak, CEO of CyberRatings.org, emphasized that raw block rates are insufficient metrics for modern security. He urged buyers to prioritize evasion resistance and TLS inspection, as attackers frequently leverage sophisticated techniques to bypass standard traffic analysis. The findings suggest that enterprises should treat native cloud firewalls as a baseline rather than a complete security solution, particularly as AI-driven workloads demand more complex, resource-heavy policy management.
