Financial Planning Pipeline Swells as Virtual Externships Gain Traction
A record 2,825 participants enrolled in the 2026 Amplified Planning Externship, marking a 36% surge in interest for the virtual training program. The data suggests that providing prospective planners with a realistic, behind-the-scenes view of the industry is effectively converting newcomers into committed career seekers.

The seventh annual iteration of the program saw 2,113 individuals complete the course, yielding a 74.79% completion rate. According to founder Hannah Moore, the results indicate that the barrier to entry is not a lack of interest, but a lack of practical exposure. Nearly 82% of participants reported a strengthened commitment to the financial planning field after experiencing the day-to-day realities of the work.
The 2026 cohort reflects an evolving demographic, with 39.4% of participants identifying as non-white or multiracial and 42% identifying as women—figures that significantly outpace current industry representation. Career changers, including military veterans and professionals from fields as varied as law enforcement and technology, accounted for 28% of the class. Meanwhile, university student participation reached an all-time high of nearly 700.
Beyond traditional training, the program piloted an initiative with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, introducing 30 high school students to the profession. Despite this growth, Moore noted a persistent disconnect between the talent pool and hiring practices. Many participants reported difficulty finding firms willing to recognize transferable skills from outside traditional financial services. As advisory firms face succession challenges and the shifting influence of artificial intelligence, Moore argues that firms must reconsider their hiring criteria to fully leverage the diverse, experienced talent emerging from these experiential programs.
