Des Hague Links Potandon Produce to Literacy Nonprofit Read Ahead
A year-long partnership between Idaho-based Potandon Produce and New York nonprofit Read Ahead aims to bolster childhood literacy through a new consumer-facing initiative. By leveraging the reach of Green Giant Fresh potatoes and onions, the collaboration seeks to expand the reach of weekly reading and mentoring programs for elementary students.

The alliance, spearheaded by CEO Des Hague, integrates the expertise of Potandon Produce and food innovation company RäFoods into the existing structure of Read Ahead. Since 1991, the organization has paired adult volunteers with students to foster academic confidence and communication skills. Under the banner of the Sprout Cares initiative, the companies intend to move beyond simple financial contributions by using retail channels to promote volunteerism and program awareness.
Beginning in October, the companies will roll out a consumer campaign titled "Grow Something Good." The activation will utilize in-store signage and QR codes to connect shoppers directly to Read Ahead's mission. According to John Rota, Chief Marketing Officer at Potandon, the goal is to transform the partnership into a unified effort that allows consumers to contribute to the mentoring programs during the holiday shopping season. While specific retail partners remain under wraps, the program represents a strategic shift for the Idaho Falls firm as it expands its community impact efforts beyond the produce aisle.
