MSC Group Breaks Ground on Sandy Cay Private Island in The Bahamas
Bahamian officials joined executives from MSC Group’s Cruise Division this week to break ground on Sandy Cay, a private island retreat set to open in 2028. Located near the existing Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, the project aims to expand the company’s luxury footprint in the Caribbean for its cruise brands.
Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago and Prime Minister Philip Davis headlined the ceremony, marking the transition from planning to active construction. The new destination is designed to offer a more intimate, wellness-focused experience compared to the neighboring Ocean Cay, serving both MSC Cruises and the luxury-focused Explora Journeys fleet.
While Sandy Cay takes shape, the company is simultaneously planning upgrades for Ocean Cay. These improvements include new family-oriented beach concepts and expanded dining venues, intended to keep the original reserve competitive as guest expectations evolve. Together, the two islands form a dual-destination strategy designed to blend shipboard life with immersive, nature-centric shore excursions across the Bahamas.
