Ontario Backs Piramal Pharma’s $5.3 Million Aurora Facility Expansion
The Ontario government is injecting $1.75 million into Piramal Pharma Solutions’ Aurora facility, a move designed to catalyze domestic drug substance manufacturing. The investment, channeled through the province's Life Sciences Scale-Up Fund, anchors a broader $5.3 million infrastructure overhaul aimed at securing 183 existing roles and adding 12 new positions.
The capital infusion allows the global contract manufacturer to modernize its R&D and clinical API production lines. By upgrading the site, Piramal aims to accelerate the commercialization of health technologies, ensuring a steady supply of critical drug substances for international and domestic markets. CEO Peter DeYoung noted the funding supports site-wide efforts to improve sustainability and operational efficiency.
Provincial officials view the project as a pillar of their ongoing life sciences strategy. MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy emphasized that the funding helps translate local innovation into market-ready solutions, while Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli highlighted the importance of scaling domestic biomanufacturing capacity. The Life Sciences Scale-Up Fund, which received an additional $24 million boost in the 2026 budget, remains a central mechanism for the province to foster a more resilient and competitive healthcare sector.
