CIEE Expands Fellowship Access for First-Generation College Students
For students navigating the financial barriers of higher education, the prospect of an international internship often feels out of reach. The Council on International Educational Exchange is attempting to bridge that gap, opening applications for three distinct fellowship programs that provide full funding for Pell-eligible and first-generation participants in 2027.
The Douglass–O'Connell Global Internship Program serves as the centerpiece of this initiative, offering 13 students an eight-week placement in Dublin. Established in 2015 and supported by the African American Irish Diaspora Network and the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation, the program honors the historical connection between Frederick Douglass and Daniel O'Connell. Participants receive full funding, including airfare and a living stipend, with applications closing on January 8, 2027.
Sustainability-focused students can apply for the Scan Design Foundation Environmental Sustainability Internship in Copenhagen. This fellowship, which accepts applications until November 20, 2026, places 12 students in Danish companies to study green business practices. Meanwhile, the Knowledge Without Borders: Democracy and Memory Fellowship targets students interested in civic leadership and history. Funded by a gift from Karen Collias, this program awards $10,000 to four students for study in Berlin, with an application deadline of November 1, 2026.
CIEE President James P. Pellow emphasized that these programs are designed to ensure students from all backgrounds can access the transformative impact of international study. By providing these grants, the organization aims to equip the next generation of professionals with the cross-cultural communication and problem-solving skills necessary for a globalized workforce.
