OpenMetal Acquires Economize to Launch Infrastructure Optimization Lab
Infrastructure provider OpenMetal has acquired cloud cost management platform Economize, aiming to bridge the gap between financial oversight and hardware deployment. The move introduces OpenMetal Labs, a new division tasked with building custom, cost-efficient infrastructure solutions for businesses struggling to manage the ballooning expenses of AI and GPU workloads.
The acquisition consolidates Economize’s FinOps software with OpenMetal’s existing hardware portfolio, which includes bare metal servers and GPU clusters. By merging these capabilities, the company positions itself as a single point of accountability for firms navigating complex hybrid cloud environments. Todd Robinson, co-founder and president of OpenMetal, noted that businesses have historically been forced to manage cost-tracking tools and infrastructure vendors as separate, often disconnected entities.
OpenMetal Labs will now serve as the consulting arm of the organization, focusing on high-complexity engineering challenges. This team combines Economize’s real-time anomaly detection with OpenMetal’s engineering experience in OpenStack and Ceph environments. Anirudh Murali, former CEO of Economize, emphasized that the integration allows teams to move beyond mere spend transparency, enabling them to actively rebalance workloads between public and private clouds to optimize both performance and capital efficiency.
