Reddit restricts Old Reddit access to stifle AI scraping
Persistent efforts to curb automated data harvesting have pushed Reddit to impose stricter gatekeeping on its legacy interface. In the coming months, the platform will restrict access to the classic site to logged-in users who have actively navigated the older layout within a rolling six-month window.
This shift aims to neutralize bots by preventing them from utilizing abandoned or dormant accounts to scrape site data. While Reddit claims this requirement encompasses the vast majority of current users, the move represents a tightening grip on how information flows off the platform. Alongside this interface restriction, the company will terminate support for RSS feeds on November 13th, citing the technology as a primary vector for large-scale automated abuse.
Reddit has increasingly prioritized controlling its data ecosystem, recently blocking the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine and launching legal action against Anthropic over unauthorized bot activity. These defensive maneuvers exist in tandem with high-profile commercial partnerships, including data-licensing deals with Google and OpenAI. Despite the technical friction, the company maintains that these changes are necessary to secure the platform against unsanctioned scraping operations.
