Aviation Giants Lobby EU for Biometric Travel Standards
A new coalition of industry leaders—including ACI EUROPE, Amadeus, IATA, IDEMIA, and SITA—is challenging the European Union's Digital Omnibus proposal. They argue that the current legislative draft risks imposing unintended restrictions on the voluntary use of biometric technology, potentially stifling innovation and passenger convenience across the continent.

The coalition, dubbed the Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition, asserts that a regulatory framework must be balanced to foster efficiency. By automating document checks, biometric systems can alleviate pressure on airport infrastructure and allow staff to focus on complex passenger needs. Proponents highlight that 74% of travelers, according to IATA data, are willing to exchange traditional boarding passes and passports for biometric verification, provided that privacy remains a central pillar of the system.
The group’s manifesto, titled 'Advancing Responsible Biometrics in Europe,' calls for technology-neutral rules that prioritize passenger choice. The coalition members emphasize that the use of biometric data must remain entirely voluntary, with users retaining the right to delete their information at any time. They argue that without these protections, the Digital Omnibus could undermine the very competitiveness it aims to strengthen. As global air traffic continues to climb, these organizations maintain that collaboration between the private sector and regulators is essential to ensure that privacy rights and technical innovation do not conflict.
