Eli Lilly's Foundayo Linked to Lower Long-Term Disease Risk

New post-hoc analysis of the ATTAIN-1 trial reveals that Eli Lilly’s oral weight-loss drug Foundayo, or orforglipron, significantly lowers the predicted 10-year risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in adults struggling with obesity or weight-related health complications.

The study, published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, indicates that the once-daily pill provides more than just weight reduction. Patients taking the highest dose of 17.2 mg experienced a 57% reduction in predicted type 2 diabetes risk and an 18% reduction in cardiovascular disease risk compared to those on a placebo. These findings were consistent across all tested dosages, suggesting the medication may serve as a critical tool in preventing the long-term health decline associated with excess weight.

Thomas Seck, senior vice president of product development at Lilly Cardiometabolic Health, noted that the data offers a path toward both improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare spending. By mitigating downstream metabolic consequences, the company believes the therapy could shift the standard of care for the millions of U.S. adults currently living with obesity. The results reinforce the potential for Foundayo to evolve beyond a weight-management treatment into a broader cardiometabolic health intervention.
