Raspberry Pi Implements Steep Price Hikes Amid RAM Shortages
A sudden $100 price surge for the 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 has blindsided hobbyists, marking the most aggressive increase in a series of adjustments. Driven by persistent global RAM shortages, the company is raising costs across more than a dozen models, with hikes climbing as high as $150 per unit.
CEO Eben Upton confirmed the increases, which follow similar adjustments made in December and February, are not permanent. He pledged to reverse the pricing structure once supply chain conditions stabilize, though he offered no specific timeline for a return to previous costs. The memory-intensive models, specifically those equipped with 4GB of RAM or more, have borne the brunt of the market volatility.
To provide a more affordable entry point, the company launched a new 3GB version of the Raspberry Pi 4, priced at $83.75. Addressing potential skepticism regarding the timing of the announcement, Upton emphasized that the new hardware and the accompanying price shifts are genuine business decisions rather than an elaborate April Fools' stunt.
