American Lung Association Urges Seniors to Seek RSV Protection
With roughly 180,000 hospitalizations occurring annually among adults 50 and older, the American Lung Association is launching a new campaign to push for higher RSV vaccination rates. The initiative targets older adults and those with chronic conditions, emphasizing a direct conversation with healthcare providers before the winter season hits.

RSV spreads rapidly during the colder months, posing a severe threat to those with pre-existing conditions like asthma, COPD, or heart failure. For many seniors, the virus does more than cause temporary illness; it can trigger long-lasting symptoms that strip away independence and diminish daily quality of life. Despite the risks, vaccination coverage remains low. Data from February 2026 shows that only 43% of adults aged 75 and older, and 33% of high-risk adults aged 50–74, have received the immunization.
Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, noted that the virus contributed to as many as 25,000 deaths across all age groups during the 2025-26 season. CDC guidelines currently suggest a single dose of the RSV vaccine for eligible individuals rather than an annual shot. Patients can receive this vaccination alongside flu and COVID-19 shots during a single visit. The organization is encouraging those at high risk—including residents of nursing homes and those with weakened immune systems—to consult their doctors immediately to determine their eligibility.
