Blue Bottle Coffee Releases Jazz Compilation on Vinyl

Eleven contemporary jazz tracks, recorded across North America and Asia, form the backbone of Blue Bottle Coffee’s debut vinyl compilation, Notes in Repose. The release serves as an auditory extension of the brand's signature coffee blending process, pairing the ritual of brewing with the deliberate pace of improvisational music.

The album features contributions from artists including Gary Bartz, Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker, Angel Bat Dawid, and the Kyoto Jazz Sextet. These compositions are interspersed with ambient audio captured within Blue Bottle cafes, intended to cultivate a focused listening environment similar to traditional Japanese jazz kissas. Chief Brand Officer Simone Hodges noted that the project draws a parallel between the creative tension of jazz and the technical precision required to balance distinct coffee origins.

This artistic intersection is anchored by the company’s Giant Steps blend, a coffee named after John Coltrane’s 1960 jazz classic. The choice of vinyl as a medium emphasizes the tactile experience of the ritual, encouraging a deliberate pause in the listener's day. Production is limited to 1,500 copies, with sales beginning October 6 via the company website. The project reflects the long-standing influence of jazz on founder James Freeman, who transitioned from his career as a professional clarinetist to establish the roastery in Oakland in 2002.
