New ANSI and America Makes Resources Simplify AM Standards Tracking
As additive manufacturing shifts from prototyping to critical production in sectors like aerospace and medicine, the lack of unified standards poses a significant hurdle. To bridge this gap, the American National Standards Institute and America Makes have launched a searchable database and a progress report to track industry standardization efforts.

The new Additive Manufacturing Standards Database, hosted by ANSI, offers a centralized directory for stakeholders to navigate the complex landscape of 3D-printing requirements. By allowing users to filter by material, process, and industry sector, the tool provides clarity on which standards are currently active and which are under development. It draws from the Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative roadmap, ensuring that manufacturers can verify the safety and performance of parts across different machines and vendors.
Complementing the database, the September 2026 Gaps Progress Report monitors five of the 141 critical gaps identified in the collaborative’s Version 3.0 roadmap. While the latest update introduced no new gaps, it functions as a living document intended to guide researchers and regulators toward the most urgent priorities. Christine Bernat, director of standards facilitation at ANSI, noted that the initiative aims to provide the community with a clear picture of the current state of play. The next update is scheduled for April 2027, maintaining a steady cadence as the industry scales.
