Elite Global Rowers Converge for Chengdu Regatta

The Nanhe River in Chengdu’s Xinjin district transformed into a global stage this week as 37 rowing teams, including crews from Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, and Stanford, competed in the 2026 Chengdu Open Rowing Regatta. The event marked the most significant turnout in the competition's history during China's National Day holiday.

The regatta featured a high-stakes clash between six international powerhouses and six leading Chinese institutions, including Tsinghua and Peking University. Athletes navigated an 800-meter straight course and a grueling 3.3-kilometer pursuit race designed to test endurance and tactical precision. Beyond the university division, 25 teams from domestic clubs and enterprises competed in quadruple sculls, highlighting the sport's rapid growth in the region.

Xinjin, a town defined by its Tang Dynasty boat-racing roots, leveraged the event to host a cultural exchange program titled "Millennia-old Ferry Landing, Global Paddlers' Gathering." International athletes participated in workshops, shared traditional meals, and trained alongside local dragon-boat paddlers. Otago University head coach Glen Sinclair noted that the regatta has evolved into the most professional university-level event in China, citing the unique blend of competitive rigor and genuine cross-cultural engagement. The festival atmosphere extended beyond the water, with street performances and traditional Sichuan opera displays drawing large crowds to the riverside.
