Decades-old hedge fund dispute heads to third trial over $165 million

A legal dispute originating in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis is returning to the New York State Supreme Court this October. Gentry Beach and Robert Vollero are seeking $165 million in compensation from former employer Paul Touradji, a sum that has ballooned over nearly twenty years of litigation.

The conflict centers on an alleged oral agreement regarding profit-sharing from trading ideas. Beach and Vollero initially claimed they were owed $60 million, a demand Touradji rejected by characterizing all bonuses as purely discretionary. After a 2019 jury verdict for the traders was vacated by an appellate court due to procedural errors, and a second trial in 2023 ended in a deadlock, the case remains unresolved. Both legal teams now face the logistical burden of reconstructing conversations that predated the global financial collapse. Attorneys for both sides acknowledge the difficulty of relying on fading memories and aging witnesses to substantiate decades-old claims. Michael Stolper, representing the traders, and Andrew Clubok, counsel for Touradji, have both signaled a desire to bring this protracted litigation to a definitive conclusion, aiming to avoid a fourth trial.
