Mapping the US Student Debt Burden by State
With over 42 million Americans collectively carrying $1.72 trillion in federal student loan debt, the financial weight of higher education is far from uniform. A new analysis of Department of Education data reveals that average balances per borrower fluctuate significantly depending on where they currently reside across the 50 states.

While the national average debt sits at $40,768, the geographic distribution shows a clear disparity in how these liabilities settle. Maryland currently tops the list, with borrowers in the state holding the highest average balance in the country at $45,589. Georgia and Virginia follow closely behind, rounding out the top three with average debts of $43,813 and $41,916, respectively.
At the other end of the spectrum, North Dakota reports the lowest average debt at $30,543, followed by South Dakota and Iowa. Although the federal data does not account for the specific institutions attended or the original loan amounts, it provides a clear snapshot of where the debt-burdened population is concentrated. Large states like California and Florida, while housing massive numbers of borrowers, fall into the middle-to-high tiers of average debt, suggesting that the scale of a state's population does not always dictate the intensity of individual financial strain.
