Beehiiv creators revolt over sudden subscription price hikes
Beehiiv is raising monthly fees for its mid-range and professional tiers, sparking immediate backlash from creators who migrated to the platform to escape Substack’s revenue-sharing model. CEO Tyler Denk maintains the increases are necessary to fund core platform development, yet users argue the value proposition no longer justifies the cost.

The platform’s restructuring introduces a name change for its Scale plan, now rebranded as Lite, which carries a minimum monthly increase of $10. For newsletters with 10,000 subscribers, the cost rises from $109 to $139 per month. Simultaneously, the Pro plan—formerly labeled Max—has climbed to $239, up from $219. Creators with fewer than 2,500 subscribers remain exempt from these charges under the platform’s free tier.
Discontent is mounting among prominent users who recently defected from competitors. Freelance journalist Tim Stevens cited a decline in ad rates and sponsor quality, noting that a 25 percent fee hike renders his operation significantly less profitable. Matt Lombardo, publisher of the NFL site Between the Hashmarks, pointed to a lack of promised features—specifically video podcasting and integrated ad tools—as a primary point of contention. For these creators, the price adjustment feels premature given the current state of platform development.
