TIER IV wins Japanese grant to pilot autonomous buses in Saudi Arabia

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has awarded TIER IV a grant to scale its open-source autonomous driving technology into the Saudi Arabian market. The initiative aims to align with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goal of converting 15% of public transportation to autonomous systems by the end of the decade.

TIER IV plans to integrate its proprietary software into new bus fleets, working alongside European manufacturers to refine systems for desert climates and local traffic regulations. The project will transition from closed-course testing to public road trials, utilizing localized data to train AI models that can navigate regional infrastructure challenges. Beyond hardware deployment, the company is partnering with local transport operators and educational institutions to launch workforce training programs focused on STEM skills.

This expansion addresses the high capital expenditure required for global autonomous vehicle adoption, where upfront costs for data collection and AI training often deter private investment. By securing government backing, TIER IV intends to establish a viable commercial model that can be exported to other international markets. The project also serves as a feedback loop for the company’s domestic operations, as insights gained from Saudi environments will be integrated back into their core Autoware software platforms in Japan.
