MiniMed Study Links Alert Responsiveness to Improved Diabetes Outcomes

Patients with type 1 diabetes who consistently engage with alerts from the MiniMed Smart MDI system show significantly better glycemic control, according to a six-month randomized trial presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.

The study, which tracked 143 participants with HbA1c levels above 8%, revealed that users who frequently responded to missed-dose and high-glucose notifications achieved 8.1 percentage points more Time in Range (TIR) and a 0.6 percentage point reduction in HbA1c compared to those with lower response rates. These findings suggest that actionable digital guidance can mitigate the mental burden of managing multiple daily injections.

Integration of the InPen smart insulin pen with continuous glucose monitoring through the MiniMed Go app aims to streamline therapy by consolidating dose calculations and glucose data. Prof. Laurent Crenier, who led the research, noted that the data establishes a clear correlation between alert adherence and clinical success. Beyond the clinical trial, real-world data from over 5,500 users further supported this trend, indicating a 9.4 percentage-point variance in TIR between high and low responders. Importantly, the study reported no incidents of severe hypoglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis among participants using the Smart MDI system, marking it as a safe alternative for patients who do not utilize insulin pumps.
