Landmarks Across North America to Glow Orange for Bullying Prevention
Nearly two dozen iconic structures across the United States and Canada will illuminate in orange this October, marking a coast-to-coast visual stand against youth bullying. The initiative, spearheaded by the American Association of Orthodontists and the nonprofit Stand for the Silent, coincides with Unity Day to promote community-wide inclusion.

The Bullying Bites campaign returns for National Bullying Prevention Month, leveraging the unique position of orthodontic practices to reach families and students. Because orthodontists see school-aged patients every six to eight weeks, they serve as consistent advocates for kindness, helping parents identify signs of distress. This year, the campaign’s centerpiece involves coordinated lightings on October 21 at venues ranging from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland to the Canada Place Sails in Vancouver.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, one in five students between the ages of 12 and 18 reports experiencing bullying. For many, the threat is persistent, with over 41% of victims fearing repeat encounters. By turning landmarks orange, organizers aim to provide a tangible reminder that students do not have to navigate these challenges alone. Beyond the visual display, the campaign provides educational resources and pledge cards within orthodontic offices to encourage long-term advocacy. Dr. Michael Durbin, president of the AAO, noted that these relationships offer a platform to reinforce safety and acceptance, while Stand for the Silent co-founder Kirk Smalley emphasized that community involvement remains the most effective tool in ending the bullying epidemic.
