Open-source tool wipes 12GB of Apple Intelligence from macOS
Users frustrated by Apple’s decision to remove the master toggle for AI features now have a workaround. A new command-line tool, RemoveMacAI, systematically hunts down and deletes the foundation models cluttering local storage, reclaiming up to 12GB of space that Apple’s current software design otherwise forces users to keep.

The utility functions by automating a tedious manual process that previously required navigating a dozen separate settings panels, including those buried within Screen Time. By executing a single command, the tool disables features like Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, and the ChatGPT integration, while simultaneously blocking the operating system from re-downloading the massive model files in the background.
While the developer estimates a standard 12GB footprint for these files, actual storage impact varies significantly between hardware configurations. Some users report even larger storage drains, with one MacBook Air owner noting that Apple Intelligence consumed over 35GB of disk space. Despite the aggressive cleanup, the tool preserves basic system functionality, such as standard Dictation, and includes a revert command for those who wish to restore the AI capabilities later. The developer claims these adjustments remain stable even after macOS system updates.
