Cook County Launches Online Tool to Manage Delinquent Property Taxes

Cook County property owners struggling to meet the October 1 tax deadline now have an alternative to high-interest credit cards or the risk of tax sale. The Treasurer’s Office has launched a free online calculator, allowing residents to structure delinquent balances into manageable, recurring payment schedules.

The tool, accessible at cookcountytreasurer.com, targets taxpayers with balances exceeding $100. By entering a 14-digit Property Index Number or address, users can generate a personalized plan for monthly or twice-monthly payments. This system provides a window of up to 13 months to clear arrears before the unpaid taxes reach the state-mandated Annual Tax Sale.

While the calculator helps organize finances, it does not erase the legal requirement for interest. Delinquent taxes continue to accrue charges at an annual rate of 9%, or 0.75% per month. This rate reflects legislative reforms championed by the Treasurer’s office, which previously halved the penalty from 18%. The platform includes options for email or text reminders and offers video tutorials in English, Spanish, and Polish to assist residents in navigating the payment setup.
