Watchdogs Warn of Illegal White House Interference in 2026 Midterms
With the 2026 midterm elections just four weeks away, democracy advocates are sounding the alarm over what they describe as a systematic, illegal campaign by the Trump administration to secure Republican control of Congress by weaponizing federal agencies and manipulating electoral processes across the country.

Adav Noti, executive director of the Campaign Legal Center, argues that the president has moved beyond traditional political maneuvering into lawless territory. The administration’s alleged tactics include promises of direct payments to voters, pressure on the U.S. Postal Service to obstruct ballot delivery, and aggressive mid-decade redistricting efforts. Noti notes that the scale of this presidential intervention is unprecedented in American history.
Election attorney Marc Elias warns that the most significant risks lie in the upcoming certification and tabulation phases. He contends that the president is actively attempting to override constitutional processes by asserting personal authority over vote counting. Even within the GOP, concerns are mounting; retiring Sen. Thom Tillis recently acknowledged the potential for a destabilizing attempt to overturn election results, labeling such a move a dangerous political error.
