Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE to Repurpose Former Coal Mine for Battery Plant
Canadian Solar’s subsidiary e-STORAGE has secured a contract to supply a 100 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system to OX2 for its Muswellbrook solar project in New South Wales. The installation, located on a former coal mine, aims to fill the dispatchable capacity gap left by retiring thermal power plants.

The project represents a strategic shift for the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone, where aging coal generators are scheduled for retirement by the early 2030s. By capturing midday solar energy and releasing it during evening demand peaks, the facility will convert variable solar output into firm, reliable power. Shipments of the SolBank 3.0 technology are set for the third quarter of 2027, with full commercial operation slated for 2028.
Under the agreement, e-STORAGE will provide an integrated suite including battery containers, power conversion systems, and its proprietary EQ-S energy management software. The deal also includes a 20-year long-term service agreement, centralizing hardware and software maintenance under a single provider. According to Jeff Roy, president of e-STORAGE, this end-to-end control is designed to ensure consistent system performance as the region transitions toward renewable energy. Steve Symons, vice president of OX2 Australia, noted that the storage integration is the critical component required to transform the Muswellbrook site into a functional hybrid facility capable of meeting grid demand.
