Pinball: Beyond the Bumpers Documentary Set for October Release
From 17th-century European origins to the modern era of celebrity-branded machines, the evolution of the arcade classic is captured in the upcoming documentary Pinball: Beyond the Bumpers. Vision Films confirmed an October 20, 2026, release date across major transactional VOD platforms in North America and the United Kingdom.

Directed by Mark Helms, the film serves as a comprehensive update to his 1995 project, The History of Pinball. It draws on decades of archival footage and interviews to map the game's cultural trajectory. The narrative moves beyond nostalgia, addressing the industry's complex history regarding the representation of women, while highlighting the rise of female competitors at the highest levels of professional play today. Technical innovation remains a central pillar, as the documentary explores how modern engineering and high-profile licensing deals have fueled a global resurgence.
The industry's growth is reflected in data from the International Flipper Pinball Association, which now monitors more than 137,000 active ranked players, a significant climb from the 500 players tracked in 2006. Manufacturers are reporting annual sales increases of 15-20%, signaling a transition from arcade relic to a thriving competitive sport. Featuring insights from industry veterans such as Roger Sharpe, Gary Stern, and Steve Ritchie, the film attempts to demystify the mechanics and controversies behind the silver ball. Ahead of the wide digital release, the production team will present the film at the Pinball Expo in Chicago from October 14-18.
