Afar Sultan Demands End to Proxy Warfare in Ethiopian Homeland

As the homeland of the Afar becomes a battleground for external forces, the Sultan is seeking urgent intervention from the United Nations and African Union.

The Afar people find themselves caught in a geopolitical vise, trapped between the necessity of their land for national trade and the intrusion of regional conflicts. The Sultanate reports that the Addis Ababa to Djibouti corridor, which handles over 95 percent of Ethiopia’s trade volume, has transformed their territory into an involuntary proxy battlefield. This strategic vulnerability has resulted in widespread displacement, severed communication lines, and a critical lack of emergency assistance for local communities.

Historical grievances exacerbate the current crisis. The Sultanate points to the 2025 drone strike in the remote village of Siyaru, where Djiboutian forces killed eleven civilians near the border. While authorities claimed the strike targeted rebel fighters from the Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy, subsequent findings confirmed the casualties were non-combatants, including women and children. Sultan Alimirah remains the primary voice challenging these actions, arguing that his people are once again bearing the human cost of wars they did not ignite. By formalizing a push for dialogue with international bodies, the Sultanate aims to prioritize the sovereignty of the Afar people over the interests of competing political factions and armed movements.
