CVS Health offers MMR vaccines across New York amid measles outbreak

With New York currently under a statewide disaster emergency due to a measles outbreak, CVS Health is opening its network of over 530 pharmacies and MinuteClinic locations to eligible residents. The move aims to curb the rapid transmission of the highly contagious virus by increasing access to essential immunizations.

Vaccination remains the primary defense against the disease, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes can infect nine out of ten unprotected individuals exposed to the virus. Symptoms, including high fever and characteristic rashes, often take up to 21 days to manifest, though infected people can spread the virus days before symptoms appear.

Dr. Amy Compton-Phillips, chief medical officer for CVS Health, urged families to verify their immunization status immediately. While the vaccine can provide protection if administered within 72 hours of exposure, officials emphasize that two doses are required for full immunity. Patients aged three and older can receive the vaccine at CVS pharmacies, while MinuteClinic practitioners are equipped to administer the second dose for children aged four to six. Appointments should be booked via the CVS Health website or mobile app to ensure supply, as high demand is expected during the crisis.
