Hatch Integrates Referral Management Tool into athenahealth Marketplace

Specialty practices using athenaOne can now automate patient intake and referral tracking through a new integration with the Nashville-based platform Hatch. By replacing manual spreadsheets and fragmented email workflows with a centralized, AI-driven queue, the company aims to reduce administrative bottlenecks and accelerate patient scheduling across clinical networks.

Referrals currently represent the most significant, yet least optimized, revenue stream for specialty providers. Staff frequently struggle with "phone tag" and manual data entry, leading to delayed care and lost appointments. Hatch addresses these inefficiencies by providing full visibility into the referral lifecycle, from initial intake to final patient visit, while offering automated updates to referring physicians.

The integration with athenaOne creates a bidirectional bridge between the two systems. When a coordinator processes a referral in Hatch, the platform automatically creates or updates the corresponding patient chart in the athenaOne EHR. This synchronization extends to insurance verification and status updates, allowing staff to manage documentation without switching between multiple software interfaces. According to Hatch CEO Chris Poole, this partnership allows practices to treat referral management as a sustainable growth channel rather than a reactive administrative burden.
