Volt Harbor Unveils MAC-BESS Platform at Battery Show North America

Ann Arbor startup Volt Harbor will debut its MAC-BESS software-defined energy platform at The Battery Show North America in Detroit from October 12–15. The company claims its battery-agnostic technology can slash capital and operating costs by up to 50% while enabling dynamic energy management for data centers and the grid.

The current energy storage model forces operators to commit to a rigid fifteen-year architecture at the point of procurement. Volt Harbor aims to disrupt this cycle by managing battery modules independently rather than as a single block. This granular control allows systems to extend the usable life of components and integrate diverse battery chemistries, including second-life EV batteries, without requiring full hardware overhauls.

Dr. Al-Thaddeus Avestruz, CEO of Volt Harbor, noted that while the industry has historically focused on battery chemistry, the power electronics layer remains largely untapped. By shifting the focus to software-defined architecture, the platform mitigates the risk of single-point failure and allows for modular upgrades. This flexibility is critical for data centers facing AI-driven power fluctuations, where traditional infrastructure struggles to handle rapid load swings.

Following the exhibition at Booth #6212, the company plans to launch a 2027 utility pilot with DTE Energy. The project will utilize second-life EV batteries to manage high-power charging spikes that currently overwhelm local grid capacity. By absorbing these energy surges, the technology helps developers clear long interconnection queues, potentially increasing the compute capacity available per megawatt of existing infrastructure.
