Metacon secures EU funding for AEM hydrogen technology research

Metacon SA, the Greek subsidiary of the Swedish hydrogen developer Metacon AB, has secured public EU funding to spearhead the AMEL research project. The initiative focuses on refining Anion Exchange Membrane water electrolysis, a technology critical for lowering the cost of green hydrogen production without relying on expensive precious metals.

The project, designated under reference ΠΔΕΡ01-0098859, carries a budget of EUR 130,407, with 80%—or EUR 104,326—covered by public grants. Over the next 24 months, the team will develop a 0.5 kW stack and test unit. Key technical goals include achieving electrical efficiency exceeding 80% and ensuring durability during start-stop cycling. Central to this development is the engineering of catalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolution that bypass the need for rare materials like platinum or iridium.

This research complements Metacon’s existing portfolio in pressurized alkaline and PEM electrolysis. Christer Wikner, President and CEO of Metacon, emphasized that the project targets long-term potential for cost-efficient hydrogen production. The work is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and Greek national funds as part of the Western Greece 2021-2027 program, aiming to foster regional innovation in sustainable energy processes.
