DNC Files Lawsuit Over Taxpayer-Funded Pro-Trump Ads

The Democratic National Committee filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday challenging a series of government-funded advertisements that promote Donald Trump’s midterm messaging. The complaint alleges that the administration illegally diverted $20 million in public appropriations to finance what it characterizes as partisan propaganda.

The filing in Washington, DC, names the White House Office, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Department of Homeland Security as defendants. According to the DNC, the administration utilized funds intended for public service to run campaign-style spots, including one advertisement nearly identical to a 2024 campaign promo. The committee argues that this use of public money creates an unfair electoral advantage by preserving the financial resources of Republican-aligned super PACs like MAGA Inc.

Despite Trump’s recent pledge to shift future ad costs to his super PAC, the government continues to air spots labeled "Paid for by the US Government." DNC Chair Ken Martin stated that the administration is misusing taxpayer dollars to bolster the GOP’s prospects as midterm elections approach. The lawsuit seeks to halt the practice, asserting that the current spending violates both the Administrative Procedure Act and statutory bans on using federal appropriations for publicity or propaganda purposes.
