ZEISS Acquires Ceres Holographics to Scale Automotive Tech
German optics giant ZEISS has acquired Scotland-based Ceres Holographics, marking a strategic push to move holographic windshield displays from high-concept prototypes into mass-market automotive production. The deal integrates Ceres’ specialized manufacturing innovations into the ZEISS Microoptics division, aiming to bypass long-standing barriers to commercializing advanced augmented reality in vehicles.

The acquisition merges Ceres’ proprietary holographic manufacturing expertise with the established ProSight platform, which serves as the backbone for ZEISS’ industrial optics portfolio. By combining these capabilities, the companies intend to accelerate the rollout of holographic windshield displays, a sector where Ceres has already established significant momentum through existing partnerships with automotive OEMs.
Dr. Roman Kleindienst, head of ZEISS Microoptics, stated that the partnership will unlock broader market entry for holographic applications, extending beyond automotive into retail, public transportation, and near-to-eye display technologies. Andy Travers, who leads the Livingston-based Ceres, noted that joining the global scale of ZEISS provides the resources necessary to transition their technology from specialized development into high-volume manufacturing. Neither party disclosed the financial terms of the agreement, though both confirmed the deal is focused on long-term industrialization.
