The Dyrt Ranks Top U.S. Campgrounds for Hiking Enthusiasts
For outdoor enthusiasts, the perfect trip often hinges on the proximity of a comfortable base camp to a premier trail. The Dyrt has released its 2026 list of the best places to camp for hiking, highlighting ten campgrounds that offer the most direct access to high-quality wilderness exploration.

Tennessee’s Fall Creek Falls State Park claimed the top spot on the list, drawing praise for its 30,000-acre landscape and proximity to some of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern United States. Following closely is Virginia's Hickory Ridge Campground at Grayson Highlands State Park, which earned its placement due to an extensive trail network—including a segment of the Appalachian Trail—accessible directly from the campsite.
According to CEO Kevin Long, the rankings reflect a growing trend where hiking opportunities act as a primary amenity for modern travelers. The selections were curated based on feedback and ratings from the app’s community of campers and hikers. Rounding out the top five are Jenny Lake Campground in Wyoming, Vogel State Park in Georgia, and Minnesota’s Baptism River Campground. The full list also includes sites in Arizona, South Carolina, North Carolina, Washington, and Wisconsin, each chosen for their ability to serve as gateways to regional trail systems.
