Lightstar Renewables Breaks Ground on Atlanta Township Solar Farm

A new 3.5 MW community solar facility is taking root in Logan County, Illinois, as developer Lightstar Renewables expands its footprint in the Midwest. The 2100th Ave Solar Project aims to marry local energy production with long-term agricultural land use, promising electricity savings for residents and new tax revenue for the county.

The project, situated on 30 acres of privately owned farmland, utilizes single-axis tracking technology designed to maximize output by following the sun’s path. While the site will not feature battery storage, the facility is engineered to feed power directly into the local distribution grid. Lightstar intends to prioritize local labor, employing regional installers and electricians throughout the construction phase.

Senior Development Manager Kyle McAdam emphasized that the site underwent rigorous environmental vetting before breaking ground. Studies included a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment and historical resource surveys, which yielded no findings. A identified wetland area on the property has been incorporated into the project design to ensure its preservation. Upon the facility’s eventual decommissioning, Lightstar is committed to removing all infrastructure, allowing the land to return to its original agricultural purpose.

This development aligns with Illinois’ broader clean energy objectives, including the goal of reaching 100% clean energy by 2050 under the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. For local subscribers, the project offers a roughly 10% reduction in electricity costs without the need for rooftop panel installations. Landowners in the region continue to look toward these models as a way to secure fixed, weather-independent income through long-term leases while maintaining property ownership.
