NBC to Adapt Wordle Into Primetime Game Show
The daily digital ritual of solving five-letter puzzles is moving to network television. NBC officially greenlit a game show version of The New York Times’ Wordle, slated for a 2027 debut with Savannah Guthrie serving as host for a series built around high-energy, team-based word competition.

Universal Television Alternative Studio is spearheading the production in collaboration with Jimmy Fallon’s Electric Hot Dog and the newspaper itself. The format shifts the solitary, meditative nature of the original game into a collaborative arena where teams of three face off to solve puzzles under pressure.
Casting for these trios is currently underway, with a hard deadline for applicants set for May 29th at 8:00 PM ET. While the project remained in development for over a year—with reports of a pilot surfacing last season—the network is now moving forward with a full series order to anchor its future programming slate.
