New York Lawsuit Claims TikTok Used ‘Placebo’ Safety Features
New York officials allege TikTok misled thousands of minors by deploying non-functional, "ghost" versions of safety tools. According to the unsealed lawsuit, the company subjected unsuspecting users to placebo testing, leaving them with the false impression that they had successfully restricted harmful content from their algorithmic feeds.
The state claims that these experiments actively blocked users from accessing critical features, such as an algorithm reset tool designed to purge inappropriate content. While participants believed they had successfully adjusted their settings, their feeds remained unchanged. This practice allegedly extended to other safety updates, including instances where the platform withheld algorithmic modifications to measure user behavior.
Internal friction accompanied these tests. A product manager for Digital Well Being at TikTok explicitly warned that a placebo group undermined the company’s stated commitment to transparency and user control. Despite these objections, the lawsuit asserts that TikTok continued to market the "Algo Refresh" feature as a permanent reset rather than the temporary adjustment it actually functioned as. TikTok spokesperson Nathaniel Brown defended the company’s actions, noting that regular testing is standard industry practice to validate platform improvements.
