Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom Zero Set for February 2027 U.S. Debut
Bandai Namco Filmworks confirmed that the latest installment in the Gundam Seed saga, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom Zero, will arrive in North American theaters in February 2027. The announcement, made at New York Comic Con 2026, positions the film as a narrative prequel to the franchise's record-breaking hit, Freedom.
The upcoming film bridges the timeline between the events of Seed Destiny and the recent Freedom release. The plot centers on the theft of the Strike Freedom Gundam from a temporary base on Onogoro Island, forcing characters like Shinn Asuka and his comrades back into active combat to prevent regional instability. The screenplay, rooted in drafts by the late Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita, and director Mitsuo Fukuda, aims to resolve lingering questions regarding the characters' motivations during the inter-war period.
English-language audiences will hear Matthew Erickson returning as Shinn Asuka, alongside Matt Hill as Kira Yamato and Sam Vincent as Athrun Zala. Director Mitsuo Fukuda noted that the project represents the final work completed by his late wife, Chiaki Morosawa, fulfilling a long-standing creative goal to explore the yearnings of the series' core cast. To coincide with the buildup to the release, a fan-driven Grand Prix vote is currently open, allowing viewers to rank character moments across the entire Seed franchise through November 30, 2026.
