Northwest Biotherapeutics Partners with NHSBT for DCVax-L Production
Northwest Biotherapeutics has secured a strategic collaboration with the UK National Health Service Blood and Transplant to scale production of its DCVax-L immunotherapy. By integrating NHSBT’s specialized apheresis and cell processing infrastructure, the biotech firm aims to accelerate the manufacturing pathway for its experimental glioblastoma treatment across England.

The partnership leverages the expertise of NHSBT’s Therapeutic Apheresis Services and Cellular and Molecular Therapies teams. These units are tasked with managing the critical early stages of the personalized manufacturing process, specifically the collection of immune cell starting material via leukapheresis. Once collected, NHSBT provides the technical handling required to transition the cellular material into the production cycle, working alongside Advent Bioservices to complete the treatment fabrication.
Operations are currently centered in Leeds and Oxford, with long-term plans to expand to additional NHSBT facilities across the country. Linda Powers, CEO of Northwest Biotherapeutics, noted that the integration of NHSBT’s specialized laboratory capabilities is intended to improve both the scale and accessibility of the therapy. Dr. James Griffin, Medical Director at NHSBT, confirmed that the collaboration forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the UK infrastructure for advanced cancer therapies, with potential for further joint initiatives in laboratory-based clinical support.
