AMD to Expand AI-Based FSR 4 Technology to Handhelds by Year’s End

AMD consumer chip boss Jack Huynh has confirmed that the company’s AI-powered FSR 4 upscaling technology will reach APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices before 2026. This move marks a significant shift from previous reports that suggested the hardware-intensive software might be restricted to high-end desktop graphics cards.

The expansion strategy involves a dual approach: optimizing the technology for existing hardware while preparing for the launch of new, FSR 4-capable APUs. While Huynh’s comments to The Elec indicate a broad rollout, the technical requirements for older devices remain a point of contention. Exec David McAfee previously emphasized that the company must ensure sufficient compute power is available to maintain quality, suggesting that only select, more capable legacy chips might support the feature.

Uncertainty remains regarding the specific hardware compatibility for current handhelds like the Steam Deck. Reports indicate AMD is preparing a lightweight version of the upscaling software alongside potential new chips, such as the rumored Ryzen Z3 or “Gainsborough” series. While Valve continues to collaborate with AMD on bringing the tech to its console-grade APUs, it has not guaranteed support for existing handheld models. AMD has yet to clarify which specific mobile processors will meet the final performance threshold for the upgrade.
