Northwest Biotherapeutics Partners with NHSBT for Cancer Vaccine Production
Northwest Biotherapeutics has secured a strategic collaboration with the UK National Health Service Blood and Transplant to scale production of its experimental cancer vaccine, DCVax-L. The partnership integrates specialized clinical expertise to support personalized immune therapy manufacturing for patients battling glioblastoma and other solid tumors.

The agreement leverages the NHSBT’s Therapeutic Apheresis Services and Cellular and Molecular Therapies teams to handle the complex logistics of the DCVax-L production cycle. Specialists are currently managing leukapheresis procedures in Leeds and Oxford, a critical step that involves collecting immune cell starting material from individual patients. Following collection, the NHSBT teams oversee the processing and handling of these cells to ensure they are prepared for the therapeutic manufacturing pathway.
This initiative marks a significant shift in how Northwest Biotherapeutics, working alongside Advent Bioservices, manages its UK manufacturing infrastructure. By utilizing the existing NHSBT network, the company aims to improve the accessibility of its dendritic cell-based vaccines. Both organizations are now exploring a phased expansion of this model to additional NHSBT locations throughout England, potentially broadening the reach of the treatment beyond the initial pilot sites.
