Bronx Secures Medicaid Exemption to Protect Coverage for 200,000 Residents
Governor Kathy Hochul has granted Bronx County a critical hardship exemption from federal Medicaid work requirements, shielding roughly 200,000 residents from potential coverage loss. The move follows intense lobbying by the Bronx Safety-Net Alliance, which warned that administrative hurdles under H.R. 1 threatened to destabilize essential health care access.

Bronx County remains the only jurisdiction in New York to meet the specific federal criteria for this exemption, which applies to areas with high unemployment rates. State Medicaid Director Amir Bassiri confirmed the relief will persist as long as the borough’s jobless figures remain above the federal threshold. The decision marks a major policy win for the Bronx, where approximately 600,000 adults—roughly two-thirds of the population aged 19 to 64—rely on Medicaid for their health coverage.
Paloma Izquierdo-Hernandez, CEO of Urban Health Plan, credited the successful advocacy to a unified effort between community providers and state officials. While the exemption removes a significant barrier, the New York State Department of Health is still finalizing implementation details due in November. Local health leaders emphasize that despite this relief, residents must remain vigilant regarding their six-month coverage renewals and separate SNAP work requirements, urging families to keep their contact information current to avoid accidental lapses in support.
