Assort Health and Nextech Partner to Automate Ophthalmology Workflows
Assort Health and Nextech are joining forces to develop specialized AI agents for ophthalmology practices, aiming to automate complex patient access workflows that currently strain front-desk staff. The collaboration seeks to integrate Assort's healthcare-specific AI platform directly into Nextech’s systems, moving beyond simple call routing to complete administrative tasks.

Ophthalmology presents unique challenges for automation, requiring systems to navigate intricate rules involving subspecialties, testing sequences, and urgent clinical escalations. Unlike general-purpose AI, Assort’s agents are designed to handle these specific variables, such as distinguishing between optical and medical routing or coordinating retinal injections. By deepening their existing integration, the two companies plan to share a roadmap for API development that allows practices to resolve patient requests rather than merely recording them.
Early adopters are already seeing tangible shifts in operations. At DuPage Ophthalmology, the AI platform currently manages approximately 500 patient calls weekly, which prompted the practice to expand the service into after-hours coverage. According to Maureen O’Malley, the practice administrator, the system has reduced call handling time by more than 60%. This partnership aims to scale such efficiencies across Nextech’s wider customer base, leveraging the 25 years of specialty experience Nextech brings to the sector. The joint offering will be showcased at the upcoming American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting in New Orleans.
