Google updates Fitbit app after user backlash

Following a surge of frustration from Fitbit users over the transition to the new Google Health app, the company is rolling out a series of interface adjustments. These updates aim to address widespread dissatisfaction regarding dashboard customization, data logging limitations, and the intrusive nature of the platform’s new AI-generated coaching messages.

Starting this week, users will gain greater control over their Today and Health dashboards, allowing for easier rearrangement, addition, or removal of specific metrics. The update also restores essential functionality, including custom food logging and more detailed sleep tracking, which now incorporates both main sleep periods and naps. Additionally, the app will introduce hourly step goal charts to the primary tabs.

Google is also refining its AI-driven coach, which triggered significant debate among users regarding the value of its automated insights. The company plans to make these messages more concise, incorporate more visual data, and reduce the frequency of notifications for minor activities like brief walks. Further technical fixes include improved activity labeling for runners and the addition of split summaries, though heads of family accounts remain constrained by migration rules regarding linked child profiles.
